Tomato Profile: The 'Polish Linguisa' Heirloom Tomato

Tomato Profile: Polish Linguisa Heirloom Tomato

History:
This is an heirloom tomato that dates back to the mid 1800's. It was most likely brought to New York by Polish immigrant gardeners. It has been profiled on many sites and it consistently get high marks for taste and fruit size.

Shape, Size and Production:
The 'Polish Linguisa' produces high yields of 4-8 oz large sausage shaped paste tomatoes based on the size of your plant and number of tomatoes on the vines.

The tomato has about a 2 inch diameter and measures 3-4 inches in length. It is much larger then your standard paste varieties. It is an indeterminate tomato that matures, with its first red fruit, in 70-75 days after planting. It is a standard leaf tomato that grows to 6-7 feet tall. It will produce through a wide range of temperatures. Color and color consistency will vary (typically bright red) based on temperature and it will continue to produce fruit until frost.

Taste and Use:
It is a very meaty tomato with few seeds and little juice. It is grown primarily as paste and sauce tomato. It is sweet with low acidity and tastes great directly from the vine or sliced in salads.

Mainstay - Throw-A-Way - Another Day:
This is a Mainstay in my garden. I have been growing it for years. I actually skipped planting it one year and really missed it. I eat these off the vine and they are simply outstanding. Why did I give it a great rating in a salad and not outstanding... I like a little more juice in salads as a dressing.

Polish Linguisa Heirloom Tomato: Gary Pilarchik

My plant is about 4 1/2 tall. It suffered two split stems from storms I had to repair. It is a little behind in height. Their are 30 fruit on the plant and they are on the smaller side for reason mention.

Even though they are a little smaller then normal, they still taste sweet and are keeping up with my year to year expectation of one of the best paste tomatoes around.

This tomato is about 4 oz and they will grow to weigh 8 ounces or more depending on conditions. You will notice the thick walls that are used for pastes and sauce. You don't want seeds in your sauce, they bitter up the batch.
