Tomato Profile: Polish Linguisa Heirloom Tomato

VIDEO COMING THIS WEEKEND

History:
This is an heirloom tomato that dates back to the mid 1800's. It was most likely brought to New York by Polish immigrant gardeners. It has been profiled on many sites and it consistently get high marks for taste and fruit size.

Shape, Size and Production:
The 'Polish Linguisa' produces high yields of 8-10 oz large sausage shaped tomatoes. The tomato has about a 2 inch diameter. It is much larger then your standard Roma Type varieties. It is an indeterminate tomato that matures, with its first red fruit, in 70-75 days after planting. It is a standard leaf tomato that grows to 6-7 feet tall. It will produce through a wide range of temperatures. Color and color consistency will vary (typically bright red) based on temperature and it will continue to produce fruit until frost.

Taste and Use:
It is a very meaty tomato with few seeds and little juice. It is grown primarily as paste and sauce tomato. It is sweet with low acidity and tastes great directly from the vine or sliced in salads.

Poor Fair Good Great Outstanding directly off the vine.
Poor Fair Good Great Outstanding salted on a plate.
Poor Fair Good Great Outstanding sliced and in a salad.
Poor Fair Good Great Outstanding in a salsa dish.
Poor Fair Good Great Outstanding as a sauce or a paste.

Poor Fair Good Great Outstanding as an overall tomato.

Mainstay - Throw-A-Way - Another Day:
This is a Mainstay in my garden. I have been growing it for years. I actually skipped planting it one year and really missed it. I eat these off the vine and they are simply outstanding. Why did I give it a great rating in a salad and not outstanding... I like a little more juice in salads as a dressing.

Comments:
If you have grown this tomato please leave a comment about your experience with the 'Polish Linguisa' heirloom tomato.
