How to Tie a Tomato to a Stake: Really

You might be growing tomatoes for the first time. You will most likely have to stake your tomatoes for support. I provided a basic picture with how to tie the tomato to a stake.  I use jute. I tie it just like the picture. It is important to leave the tied portion of tomato space to grow and wiggle. Don't tie it too tightly to the support pole. You will cut into the stem and damage your tomato.

Some people feel jute is to narrow and they prefer to rip towels and about a 1/2 inch width. The theory is the tomato will have less of a chance of being cut using the thicker towel versus the narrow jute. I haven't had a problem in 10 years.

You can typically tie a tomato at about every foot of growth. Use your judgement.
