A Response to a Question From Dan: Do Topsy Turvy Tomato Baskets Work

Does the Topsy Turvy Tomato - Upside Down Hanging Tomatoes Kit really work? I found The Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter at - http://yousawitontv.yolasite.com/topsy.php They claim it works in a simple yet ingenious way. As the sun warms the plant like a greenhouse, the root system explodes and thrives inside the planter. Because the Topsy Turvy is upside down, water and nutrients pour directly from the root to the fruit, giving you up to 30 pounds of deliciously ripe tomatoes per plant! Use your Topsy Turvy™ to grow deliciously ripe tomatoes for homemade sauces, sandwiches, salads and more without harmful pesticides or backbreaking work. Should I invest in one/ It looks very convenient for my small deck. Thank you.

Yes they work. Or notice the TM mark... is this an Ad from Dan or a real question? Either case for all of you thinking of doing some sort of upside down tomato.... They are only as effective as you can keep them watered. Tomatoes suck water like a sponge. If you decide to build one and I have direction for 5 gallon upside down containers, you have to...

1. Keep them watered.
2. Make sure you don't plant a tomato that will get to heavy.
3. Keep them watered. It is that important.

Oh and the question says water and nutrients poor directly from the roots to the fruit. That is not a benefit of being upside down. A plant's system is much more complex. Gravity has little benefit if any. The only thing growing upside down does is frees up garden space or lets you grow in a place you couldn't otherwise grow vegetables.
